Smart and successful IA/UX really comes down to knowing 'what to show, and when to show it.' When meaningful communication is the goal, all the complexities and intelligence beneath a well-designed experience should be invisible to our users.
Healthcare - Patient Safety
(2012-2016)
A Health IT company's flagship Patient Safety Saas application (Safety Event Manager), which is used primarily in Acute Care hospitals, was a chore to use and looked extremely dated. Our UX and content overhaul saw average entry times drop from almost 20 minutes down to 6-10. With its more streamlined workflows, increased configurability, and mobile strategy for tablet and smartphones, SEM 'Qprecision' has been activated in over 2500 healthcare facilities nationwide.
Patient Engagement & Empowerment
(2015-16)
A personal project (maybe for an upcoming hackathon) is a voice-activated seizure tracker for mobile. Having a family member with Epilepsy, there are both clinical and psychological benefits to easily and accurately tracking seizure activity; not only looking for (and sharing) patterns in a more precise and data-driven way, but also feeling like you're contributing as much as you can to solving the most heart-breaking puzzle you know.
Cable channel website and streaming
(2009-10)
What started as a simple skinning became a full UX reboot that provides an extremely rich discovery-based web experience. The user-friendly 'screening rooms' concept highlights the channel's expertise & personality.
HR Services for Outpatient Clinics
(2011)
An HR veteran starting his own firm was interested in creating a custom business application to help small medical practices without dedicated HR staff or expertise.
Even though the scope turned out to be too large to execute, a few of the strategies we came up with, such as considerable baked-in 'best practices' guidance, and 'cheat code-esque' workflow ergonomic diagrams, would inform my later work in healthcare.
Creative Director
(2006-2008)
ClickStar was an online movie download site started by Morgan Freeman's Revelations Entertainment and Intel. I led the redesign of the launch site (April 2007) with CEO Lori McCreary. After it became clear iTunes and Netflix would own the space, I was kept onboard to redesign Revelations' corporate site (2008) and, with the CTO, concept a USB 3.0-based movie kiosk project called Digiboo (2010).
Multi-media Entertainment Design (1998-2008)
'User Experience' doesn't just mean applications and websites. During my decade in Los Angeles working for clients like HBO, ESPN, MGM, Scripps, Warner Bros, and Dolby, I produced DVD menus, interactive games, "10-foot" TV interfaces, and even a 5.1 Surround Sound dance club . Technology is at its best when it engages people's senses, is shared amongst people, and the experience spills beyond 'the screen.'
